Photobiomodulation is dose-dependent. The details of your treatment matter.

Photobiomodulation follows what researchers describe as a biphasic dose response. There is a therapeutic window in which an appropriate dose of light produces the desired biological response. Too little energy may not stimulate the tissue sufficiently to produce a meaningful effect. But more is not necessarily better. As the dose moves beyond that therapeutic window, the beneficial response can diminish and excessive dosing may become counterproductive.

This is why effective treatment is not determined by brightness or treatment time alone. Wavelength, power, dose, placement, frequency, and progression work together to determine how much energy is delivered, which tissues receive it, and how treatment is applied over time.

  • Wavelength

    Wavelength is measured in nanometers (nm) and influences how light interacts with tissue and how deeply it can penetrate. Different wavelengths therefore reach different tissue depths and biological targets. The Solasta Handheld Laser combines 650 nm red light and 808 nm near-infrared light to provide treatment across different tissue depths.

  • Power Output

    Power is measured in watts (W) or milliwatts (mW) and describes the rate at which optical energy is delivered. Power affects how quickly a given amount of energy reaches the treatment area, but higher power is not inherently better. It must be considered together with treatment time, treatment area, and the intended dose.

  • Dose

    Dose is expressed as energy in joules (J), or as radiant exposure in joules per square centimeter (J/cm²) when treatment area is considered. Power and treatment time work together to determine the total energy delivered, which means changing either variable changes the dose. An effective dose must fall within the appropriate therapeutic window rather than simply delivering as much energy as possible.

  • Placement

    Irradiance, commonly expressed in mW/cm², describes optical power delivered over a given area. The size and location of the treatment area, contact with the tissue, and distance from the light source can all influence how much energy reaches the intended tissue and how that energy is distributed.

  • Frequency

    Treatment frequency determines how individual doses accumulate over time. The interval between sessions is part of the dosing strategy because photobiomodulation initiates biological responses that continue after the light itself has been removed. More frequent exposure is therefore not automatically more effective.

  • Progression

    Photobiomodulation dosing is dynamic rather than necessarily fixed. Power, treatment time, frequency, treatment mode, and treated areas can be adjusted as treatment progresses according to treatment stage, tissue response, and individual tolerance rather than repeating the same exposure indefinitely.
